Abstract
@EN The author investigated the effect of insulininduced hypoglycemia on the enzyme activities of glutamate metabolism in the rat brain cortex and hippocampus for the purpose of discovering the mechanism of insulin shock therapy in schizophrenia.
The activities of aspartate transaminase, distributed in the cortical mitochondria, and aspartate transaminase, glutamate dehydrogenase, and glutamianse, distributed in the hippocampal mitochondria, increased significantly after highdose insulin
treatment for 10 days but were blunted after 20 days.
Also, alanine transaminase, distributed in the rat hippocampal cytoplasm. Increased significantly after high-dose insulin treatment for 20 days.
The findings suggested a correlation bet ween insulin-induced hypogycemia and the cerebral glutamate metabolism in the rat.
Therefore, insulin coma therapy is, in some sense, considered to improve the schizophrenia partially through the mechanism of the effect of hypoglycemia on the cerebral glutamate metabolism.
